Bat Flying Around Your Home?

Sudden Appearances

Bats may suddenly appear in a home or business for a variety of reasons. If it happens in the winter or colder fall/spring months there's very good chance it came down from the attic following the airflow of a wire or plumbing chase or that of a wall void.  In the summer months in late July to early August, babies learn how to fly. They may get lost, explore some and they may wind up in your living space. This can be a tell tale sign of bats living in your attic, a potential maternal colony. Bats can also get into your home through a window without a screen. If your window has been left open on a summer night or if you have a window air conditioning unit with a gap on the side a single bat can find their way in.

How to Catch a Bat in Your House

If a bat is in your home and you need to get it out the best practice is to watch and wait for it to land on a flat surface like the wall. Take a cardboard box or plastic container and place it over the bat. Place a slider piece of cardboard behind the box as you keep the box firmly pressed against the wall. Once you capture the bat walk outside and let it go. If you woke up to the bat, keep it  preserved, so you can have it tested for rabies, this will save you from having to get a rabies vaccination. If you're not comfortable call us and we will remove it. Try to keep the bat contained to one room until we arrive. You should have an attic inspection done to make sure there are no more bats. It's a no charge inspection, you can reach us 518-869-7378 to set it tup.

Emergency Bat Removal

Meerkat offers Emergency Bat Removal during the summer from Late July-Mid August. Please call us if you have a bat in your home and would like to have it removed. Please do not kill the bat, keep it quarantined into one room and wait for us to arrive. Call us at 518-869-7378

Attic Bat Removal

In an attempt to stay warm little brown bats will scratch under the insulation and on top of the sheetrock in your attic or in a wall void. Late at night the sound can be loud and may be heard overhead or through your bedroom wall. If you hear scratching or a scurrying (moving around or flapping but not running) in your attic or walls, it could be a telltale sign of bats. The best thing to do is to call us for a free inspection of the space, as bat removal services may be necessary.

Get Rid of Bats in the Eaves

Many bat problems inside a home start in the eaves of the home where bats have a access to the wall and the insulation of your home. From here they are able to roost year round and if they have access, may slip down the wall and out under a baseboard in your home. If you have bats in the eaves it's important to get an inspection, the earlier you deal with the problem the easier it is to rectify and it cost less too.

Get Rid of Bats in the Chimney

Bat roosting inside the chimney is problematic if there is a break in the brick and they have access to your wall void and the insulation. Most problems are on the outside at the Chimney tie-in where they have access either to an exterior wall or your attic. You should have a full inspection done. Sometimes the lack of a chimney cap will allow bats to fly down the chimney and enter the home that way.

Bat Biology, Bat Entry and Identification

Bats commonly enter buildings through openings associated with the roof edge and valleys, eaves, apex of the gable, chimney, fascia/soffit, attic or roof vent, dormer tie-ins, and siding. Bats enter high, even if you saw one in the basement. Once inside your attic, bats can easily slip down a wall cavity and appear from under the baseboard or gap somewhere attached to a plumbing or electrical chase. Bats follow the airflow and there's plumbing and electrical wired from your attic to your basement giving them plenty of opportunities to slip into the home or basement from the attic. Bats generally don't use the attic hatch as a route unless it's loosely fitted or broken. Bats are able to squeeze through narrow slits and cracks. For purposes of bat management, we pay attention to any gap of approximately 1/4 x 1 1/2 inches or a hole 5/8 x 7/8 inch. Such openings must be considered potential entries for at least the smaller species, such as the little brown bat. The smaller species require an opening no wider than 3/8 inch that is a hole the size of a dime. Openings of these dimensions are not uncommon in residential or commercial structures.  These gaps can be due to boards that have shrunk, warped, or otherwise become loosened.  Furthermore, dormer tie-ins, louver vents and ridge vents are popular entry points.

Bat Biology & Behavior

Rabies and Diseases

Bats are beneficial to your yard but toxic to your home. Anyone who says other wise hasn't had to get a set of rabies shots.

Bat Diseases Histoplasmosis & Rabies: Bats are vectors of the rabies Virus, the percentage that are infected is small, about 5-6 percent but the percentage of those infected that enter living quarters is unknown and is expected higher as bats are quite careful to stay out sight. Being bit or scratched by a bat while your sleeping can happen without you knowing. If the bat enters your home while you're asleep and you awake to the bat flying around your room, you will be required to get a rabies vaccine if the bat is not captured and tested. Histoplasmosis is a very common lung disease of worldwide distribution caused by a microscopic fungus, Histoplasma capsulatum. Histoplasmosis is associated with the guano and debris of birds and bats. Wind is probably the main agent of dispersal, but the fungus can survive and be transmitted from one site to another in the intestinal contents of bats. The disease can be acquired by the casual inhalation of wind-blown spores from your attic, but infections are more likely to result from visits to point sources of growth of the fungus. Such sources include bat caves, barns, attics, and belfries, that are soil enriched with bat guano.

Bat Guano Cleanup and Abatement

Bat Abatement Services - Guano and Urine Bat Guano is toxic to your home. Bat excrement produces an unpleasant odor as it decomposes in attics, wall spaces, and other voids that they roost in.  The pungent, musty, acrid odor can often be detected from outside a building containing a large or long-term colony. The smell is not unlike the odor problems that occur when animals die in inaccessible locations. The odor also attracts arthropods which may later invade other areas of a building. Bat guano may provide a growth medium for microorganisms, some of which are pathogenic to humans, such as histoplasmosis. Guano accumulations may fill spaces between walls, floors, and ceilings. It may create a safety hazard on floors, steps, and ladders, and may even collapse ceilings. Accumulations also result in the staining of ceilings, soffits, and siding, producing unsightly and unsanitary conditions. Meerkat Pest Control will remove the Guano and offers a full abatement service to decontaminate the area.

Methods and Materials

Meerkat's Wildlife crew uses an extensive 12 point inspection on the roof to make sure all area's are sealed with screening or other bat resistant material including the ridge vent, louver vents, chimney and dormer tie-ins, fascia, soffit and corner gaps.

In some cases where the ridge vent has been compromised or damaged Meerkat will install Ridge-Guard a permanent solution that cost about 30% less then replacing your ridge vent.

The importance of roof ridge ventilation: Roof ridge ventilation is a necessity whenever a roof has asphalt shingling.  Without proper ventilation, asphalt shingles will be compromised prematurely due to excessive attic temperatures.  The shingles will warp and cause potential leaks and animal entrance points.

The problem with plastic ridge-venting and other styles: The plastic version of ridge venting starts warping and cracking with age. Most of the other fiber style ridge vents are easy for critters such as squirrels and mice to chew or tear out allowing easy access for bats and birds to enter the attic as well. Once in the attic many problems associated with feces, mites, and even the HVAC system of the home may occur.

The old way to “fix” the problem: Tearing of the ridge cap, removing the ridge vent, installing metal mesh, then installing new ridge vent and ridge cap. And the problem could very well happen again with squirrels chewing holes, bats, mice or birds getting back under.

 The benefits of Ridge-Guard:

  • A lot less time in labor and materials (opposed to tearing off existing ridge and reinstalling)

  • For most roofs about 50% saving, and a product to last as long as your roof.

  • Highly effective and barely visible from the ground.

Bat Removal Cost

Meerkat uses our Digital Bat Monitoring system in complex cases for a visual confirmation to make sure the bats are out and the secondary entry points are sealed up so they can't get back in.

Bats are toxic to our homes but beneficial to our environment and your yards eco-system, which is why we do NOT under any circumstances exterminate the bats but humanely evict them so they can live outdoors and not in your home. The average cost to remove one bat from your home is about $250, for a colony of bats in the attic, It's around $1500-$5000 depending on the scope of work.

Eco-Friendly Bat Treatment

Bats are beneficial to your yard as they can eat a large amount of mosquitos each evening. We don't kill the bats but humanely evict them through a one way door device as shown in the video. From there we seal up all the entry point around the roof, HEPA vac the droppings and sanitize the space.
